URC WR7, a Real Deal September 7, 2010 lazybird (MA, USA) As many other reviewers have mentioned, this remote is a REAL DEAL. For less than $20, URC delivers a well functioning, easy-to-use universal remote. I was seriously considering higher end, professional line up of the company (such as MX900) as well as more popular Harmony from Logitech, but I first wanted to give a shot with this. I am extremely satisfied with this remote. I control TV, cable box, audio (CDP + integrated amp), and dimmer switch.
I am not going to repeat what others have already said, but I would like to add a few comments from my observation over a month or so.
1. For those who are interested in hiding equipment in closets or cabinets, I am happy to report that this remote works great with "Next Generation Remote Control Extender", another very positively reviewed product here at Amazon. I keep my cable box hidden in my media closet located about 15 ft behind me. (TV signal runs via CAT5e.) The URC - NG combo beautifully delivers! As long as you don't need to control many different pieces (since this remote allows up to 7 devices), ~$60 for the combo gives you a very reliable solution for IR/RF remote control.
FYI, my setup has (1) URC-WR7, (2) Next Generation extender, and (3) Atlona HDMI extender (at-hdmi40srs).
2. Contrary to a few other reviews, this unit is NOT too heavy or big. My wife, who is rather petite and find many normal things in life rather big and heavy, says that she likes the remote because it's light. I'd say the unit has a standard TV or cable box remote size and a bit on the lighter side.
3. Finally, the remote does NOT look cheap at all. I would say the unit is much more handsome than what's shown in Amazon.com pictures. It has sort of a powdered(?) look/finish on the front surface, which is a bonus on top of all the functions that it has.
Get this one. You cannot really go wrong.
CONSUMERS READ August 26, 2010 XxXChrisGXxX (Connecticut) The remote was easy to program as long as you are following the instructions. The remote works for single IR commands with ease. When it comes to my Philips HTS3371D Home Theater System the learn function worked but has some flaws (when you hit the button that is to be learned on the old remote fast) such as the input button which will either be super fast with scrolling or (when you hit the button that is to be learned once or slow) you have to hit another button then the input button each time to get the remote to switch inputs (because some remotes have 2 ir commands). This is due to Philips 2 IR commands instead of one. The best thing is it work extremely well for my volume on the Home theater system while watching cable with my cable box! (the reason why I bought it), the sound button works flawlessly, and I dont mind the fast scrolling of the input (you just have to hit the button a couple times). All in all without spending 50-200 dollars on a nice logitech harmony, or pronto, this remote is cheap and does work extremely well. BTW, Comcast members with a Motorola box try both set of codes under motorola cable box and comcast. My motorola box only worked with a Comcast code! listed in the back of the manual.
GREAT REMOTE, WORKS WITH 2 IR COMMAND REMOTES (JUST NOT PERFECT! IT IS 20 BUCKS NOW!)
Absolutely stunning for the money August 18, 2010 C. SINGH At first, I was skeptical. I did not believe all of the reviews I was seeing, then I went and looked back at how in depth everyone's review was and then I said hey. let me give this a shot. I do not regret thinking this one single bit.
first of all, the design of this remote is a real eye catcher, seriously I have a 40" Samsung LCD, and this remote is way nicer in comparison. Not just the looks, but all of the buttons are well sized and have good spacing, and the buttons go down when pushed. So it was time to set this up, I bought this for a 26" Samsung TV for my mom, that she keeps in her room, never have I used a universal remote that was so easy to set up. So how did I set it up? Easy, all I did was hold down the "TV" button, the TV button blinked a couple of times, and then according to the instructions all you do is hold the power button, and press from 1-10 one by one, that's it! By the time I hit number 4 the TV and remote was already fully programmed. In literally 20 seconds, I connected this to the TV and was shocked how easy it has gotten to connect these remotes. You basically leave the TV on, and then by the time I hit 4 the TV shut off itself, that's how I knew that it already worked, seriously amazing. The reason this happens as well, is this is one of those learning remotes, punching in numbers has become a thing of the past.
There are those really cool glow in the dark all red buttons, and the Red is bright and has a good glowing radius as well. The whole button is illuminated, it is like something out of Tron. Im seriously considering buying another one of these remotes, for my Samsung television!
Are there any cons? Yeah there is one con, and one con only, that is this TV remote is HUGE, I mean it's even longer then those Direct TV/Dish Network remotes, not sure if that is bothersome but I figured id mention it, on the flip-side it is substantially lighter despite the length. Perfect 5 out of 5 remote all the way around, don't hesitate to buy it!
Great, Inexpensive remote that does it all. August 14, 2010 erictepe After getting frustrated with "universal" remotes that came with other components, I wanted one that would actually work and control all the functions of the component I was trying to control. Anyway I have a Samsung 6500 series LCD, Xbox 360, Motorola HD DVR cable box, Samsung Blu-Ray and a ZVOX Z-Base 550 surround speaker.
Here are the things that I like:
1. I like that it lights up all the buttons so you can see all of them
2. Input is easy and the codes set up the remote to work all of the functions of each individual component
3. It did not have codes for the Zvox speaker but the learning function allowed me to teach it everything it needed to know
4. It has a nice layout of all the buttons
5. It has macros so you can set everything to turn on or off with the press of a button
6. It has "punch through" commands. This allows you to turn on the tv, cable box, surround sound and associate the sound, menu/guide, etc with the component you want it associated with. For example, when watching TV, I associate the sound with the cable box which allows me to have all the cable box functions including adjusting the sound. I don't have to hit "audio" to change the sound then hit the "cab/sat" button to work the cable box. Same thing goes for the DVD player.
The bottom line is that for $20 you cannot go wrong with this remote. It is the first time I have not had to use 2 remotes ever.
Universal Remote Control August 12, 2010 coachv This remote works very well. Just like anything else, it takes a little getting used to. It is well made and the buttons are well laid-out. Documentation is very good and support line is excellent. Plus, the product is priced right.
