4 out of 5 stars One Of The Best Harmony Remotes For DVR/Recorder Users   September 6, 2010
J. Russell (San Diego, CA United States)
PROS: Buttons, Back-Lighting, Layout, Shape, Looks, Standard AAA Batts (be sure to use rechargeables), extra Picture and Sound buttons, extra Up/Down Arrow keys for DVR Page/etc use.

CONS: ALL Harmony Software, ALL Harmony Display Reliability if dropped, no FAV or dedicated RGBY buttons.

I have had many Harmony remotes. The 670 is the best. It has a proven comfortable peanut shape like a TIVO's. It's layout is exceptionally convenient and compact. Unlike the 800 series, its buttons are raised for easier access and have a very good tactile feedback. Unlike the 500 series, its buttons are harder making for better back lighting, no labeling wear-off, and more raised with better tactile. The model 620 is a black version of the 670. See this link for a comparison of Harmony Remotes features, functions, and layouts: [...]

Like some other models, this one has the additional Sound and Picture buttons which are a must-have once you have used them. Push once to give you instant access to a separate Amp(Sound) or TV(Picture) devices keypad layout while in an Activity. Push again to return you to the Activity keypad layout.

Like some other models, this one has the additional up and down Arrow keys essential for Cable Box or DVR Recorder Paging/etc use. Unlike some other models, it does not have the FAV button for storing favorite channels on the remote itself, nor the Red, Grn, Blue, and Yel general purpose buttons found on many newer Cable Remotes. However, most modern TVs have the FAV channel feature built into the TV, and I assign RGBY button functions to the unused transport buttons; like Fwd, Rwd, Skip Fwd, and Skip Bak buttons, when in TV/Picture modes.

All Harmony hardware designs are very good in general. This one is my favorite. All Harmony remotes software sucks if you do anything other than the initial step-by-step setups. Very unintuitive and convoluted, but sill better than other online programmable remotes, like the XSight or Neos. Once you have gotten through tweaking your remote once though, it becomes easy.

Like most remotes with digital displays, you must be more careful with them than original equipment remotes without displays. If you drop them hard, you can end with a partially working or no display at all. This is the most fragile part of a remote. Most of the negative reviews on this remote you will find are common across all online programmable remotes with a display; software, support, display reliability, and battery consumption. The last item is solved by NOT using non-rechargeable batteries and setting the software option to control motion auto-lighting and duration.

2 out of 5 stars Not bad, but died after warranty expired.   August 25, 2010
C. Lockwood (Newport, KY)
I had the thing for about 18 months. Not a bad remote. The programming is o.k. though it would be nice to have a stand alone application instead of the web app. It did operate all of my equipment (media center pc, samsung plasma, yamaha receiver, and xbox) and the macros and learning functions all worked as expected.

Two complaints:

1) It really sucked down the batteries, and it seemed to do so randomly. Using the same brand of batteries, sometimes they would last a couple of months, sometimes only a couple of weeks. Very weird.

2) As many others have posted, the LCD died after about 18 months. The remote still works, but without the screen, it's not really what I paid for and isn't usable by the rest of the family. It's outside the warranty and I don't feel like paying logitech $100+ for a remote for a year and a half, so I'm going with another brand.

2 out of 5 stars Screen died   July 25, 2010
Deepi (Oakland, CA)
Setup was a little complicated, of course, but once it was set up it worked fine -- until the screen died. Most functionality is not available without the softkeys on the screen. Battery contacts have always been spotty, now it's completely dead -- even with new batteries it doesn't work at all. For the price, the performance is terrible.

2 out of 5 stars Poorly built   July 15, 2010

The features of this remote are great. I will definitely buy a Logitech harmony remote in the future. However, this remote in particular is poorly designed.

1) The remote is almost symmetrical from top to bottom, so if you grab the remote upside-down, you can't really tell until you start pressing buttons and they're doing things you don't expect. The buttons all feel so similar, and the layout does not lend itself to being memorized (even after 7 months of ownership.) I find myself often having to press the "glow" button so I can see the buttons, and I even have to search for the glow button for a few seconds.

2) the directional pad on this remote is not good at all. You often have to press very deep, past the 'click' sound for the press to register. This gets very annoying VERY fast. it completely ruins any chances of navigating menus quickly.

I got this remote while it was on sale for around $70, and even at that relatively lower price, I'm not happy with the remote. I've used it for about 7 months now.

This remote has proven to me that Logitech Harmony remotes are a worthy investment. But it's also shown me that this model is not a good one.

2 out of 5 stars Great functionality, but too fragile   July 2, 2010

First let me say that I love Harmony Remotes. They are great products in terms of functionality. Unfortunately the I've owned two 670's, both of which broke in the same way. The USB connector and IR light in the front became detached from the device. The thing is just not durable. Sure, it has been dropped or knocked off of the coffee table a couple of times, but the darn things are just too fragile. I believe the fact that I experienced the exact same issue on each of my remotes is proof of this fragility. I'm going to give Logitech one more try with the Harmony One. We'll see if the build quality is any better.
