Wife friendly!!! March 10, 2010 F. Scott Fein I read reviews all the time for products because we share the best feedback, so here it is: This is the best RF remote. Here is why:
1. Easy to set up. Literally you type in the manufacturer and model number of the items you want to set up in the software and the remote is ready to go
2. IT WORKS! My cable box, TV, and sound system all turn on and off together. My cable box is in a closet in another room. (**I have a Samsung sound bar system that said in reviews that no remote works with it... this one did!)
3. It is so easy to use MY WIFE USES IT AND LOVES IT!!!
4. Even though it 'dumbs' down the remote to look like your cable remote, you can still easily access all of the the other remotes if necessary by selecting 'Devices'.
5. This remote is extremely similar to standard cable remotes in feel and functional buttons (Comcast)
In short, this remote came highly recommended to me, and I am highly recommending it. It was a bit more expensive than the others, but I have heard numerous horror stories, like the up and down button are on different pages of the menus.
Great features IF you never EVER drop it March 9, 2010 J. Pulliam (Texas) I don't have much to add to all the other reviews EXCEPT,
Between my wife and child, the remote gets dropped about 1 a month (2feet or less) and causes one of the following:
a. take out battery to reboot
b. put back on charger to "jump start"
c. all out have to re program remote
Now I realize that it was not designed to be dropped, but it is a remote for heaven sakes, it bound to happen at some point.
Perfect March 8, 2010 all4fun This remote has made everything easier. I use it to work through cabinet doors and being able to hide all the equipment makes everything look cleaner. I'm thinking of getting the harmony 880 version (which doesn't work through walls, cabinets, etc.) for another room because it is so like the 890. If you are looking for something to work through walls, this remote is excellent. It's so easy to use, I no longer get phone calls in the middle of class from parents asking how to turn on the TV!
Versatile Features but Poor Durability March 7, 2010 L. Meyer (United States) This remote works great for operating all of your entertainment devices. I was surprised with the endless ways to program buttons for different devices while in individual "activities." It's moderately customizable with regard to incorporating images onto the color display, which I thought was pretty neat.
That said, this remote seriously lacks durability. When I first took it out of the box and checked it out, I noticed something was rattling inside the remote. However, I was so excited to finally condense my remote collection from 8 to 1, that I decided not to let the rattling bother me... until about a month later when the buttons wouldn't light up. They wouldn't even light when I pressed the "glow" button, so it wasn't just an operator error. Now, about two months later, I notice that it takes a long time for the remote to turn on when it's picked up. Typically, it lights up right away when it's picked up, but now I've noticed a significant lag.
I am incredibly unimpressed with this remote, considering the price. I wouldn't be surprised to eventually see this in the clearance bin marked down 90%. The concept of the remote is great... too bad that's completely negated by the fact that it can't withstand regular use. Please keep in mind that this remote was handled only by my husband and myself - we have never been overly rough it - I shudder to think how long this would last in a household with children!
Beware Dish DVR owners- This Remote is NOT FOR YOU March 7, 2010 Greg Pittman (Denison, TX USA) Before buying this item, I really did my research, reading hundreds of reviews, and checking the Logitech website for compatibility with my DISH PVR. I chose to go with the refurbished offer, and anxiously awaited my receipt of the remote. When I got it, I was amazed how easy it was to setup. A major downside to setup, however, is the fact that the software has to connect to the net to download firmware updates (21 of them, in my case). Some of these went quickly, others didn't. Each time the software would have to restart itself. Seemed pretty clumsy, but at least you know that when the process is finished, you have the latest and greatest version of the software and firmware for the remote. I quickly proceeded through specifying all of my equipment, and all of my equipment was easily found in the seemingly endless array of manufacturers they have cataloged. I never knew there were that many thousands of DVD player manufacturers! Once complete with the remote setup, it asks you to plug in the RF extender, so that it can update its firmware. Halfway through that process I got data checksum error, and the software automatically starts the process over again. I got the checksum error repeatedly, and decided to call tech support. Contrary to what others have said, I found the support to be helpful, and they quickly determined that the RF extended that was sent to me was part of a bad batch. They will have to replace it. They told me that I could continue to use the remote in the meantime. Unfortunately that did not prove to be the case. Anyone who has Dish satellite tv with a VIP DVR attached which serving two separate rooms will not be able to use this remote, evidently. After completing the setup, I am presented with a screen which informs me that the remote will not control the PVR and that I need to hold on to the PVR's remote to use when I need to control it. What the heck?!! THe whole idea of a harmony remote is to use ONLY ONE REMOTE. The logitech website has a tool to use before buying a remote from them into which you enter all of your equipment and it tells you whether or not your device is supported. Well, apparently it is wrong about the VIP DVR. Of course, now I am having trouble being able to return it because it was refurbished and was bought through an Amazon Seller, not Amazon itself.
