Product Description This preprogrammed learning remote control is designed to simplify your entertainment experience. The brightly backlit LCD view screen actually has 26 individual pages for operating up to 10 audio and/or video components. The component buttons are strategically placed around the LCD view screen and can be renamed, according to the actual components that your audio or video system may include. The MX-500 is ergonomically designed and weight balanced to fit comfortably in one hand. The brightly backlit LCD view screen and buttons make navigation within a darkened home theater environment a breeze. To further enhance the navigation of the remote control, the MX-500 has incorporated a multi-directional joystick. The MX-500 Punch Through feature enables control of one component while the remote is actually in another component mode. For example, you can adjust the volume of the amplifier while actually in the DVD mode, eliminating the need to toggle back-and-forth from the DVD screen to the amplifier screen. The macro feature allows the remote control to be programmed to send out multiple commands at once. The unit has 3 dedicated macro buttons, a "Power" button and a "System Off" button that send out up to 20 commands each. For example, the MX-500 can be programmed to turn on all the components within the home theater system at just the touch of a button! The MX-500 also incorporates a memory back-up system designed to prevent memory loss for up to one year, should the batteries be removed. Great affordable Controller July 22, 2010 Grover C. Sharp I'am not a techie by any stretch. However I have had the MX500 remote for about 2 weeks and I think its great. The instruction book while I'm sure is adequate is too dry for my liking so I just hunt and peck for what i want. So far I have loaded my new Samsung TV LN32B530, my Dish Satellite Controller and also a new Panasonic Blu-ray player. The manual has all of the codes you need to get started but then you might have to use the learning function to get all of the functions programed. I was very much impressed with the ability to load all of the newer products into the remote. The remote is solidly built, I think the backlight is very adequate and its much nicer to be operating with 1 remote as opposed to 3.I can't compare this to the much more expensive Logitech controllers, but why spend a small fortune when you can get a very nice controller for a reasonable price.
Excellent device! Easy to use, lots of custom LED labels January 27, 2010 Dr. J (Endicott, NY) I have had one for >5 yrs and just bought another for a friend. Very easy to use. The keypad has more "standard" keys than most remotes plus you can have an additional 2 pages of 10 LED-labels each per device. Highly recommended.
Great Universal Remote January 9, 2010 V. Messner (PA, United States) I've owned this remote for 2.5 years now, and never regretted the purchase. It's about as simple as a high functioning universal remote could possibly be. Fairly intuitive, with only the occasional need to consult the manual for non-standard programming features. Battery life is spectacular. This is a powerful - if simple and bland (and I say that in the best possible way,) remote that does exactly what's it's supposed to do, and does it exceptionally well.
4 Years and going strong January 2, 2010 Eric D. Corwin (Pullman, WA United States) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have owned the MX-500 for over 4 years. This remote can operate any IR device made. This being said, the MX-500 can be tricky to set up, but after a few devices are entered, you will get the details down quickly. I have used the MX-500 with numerous home theater set-ups, and I just add new devices as I get them. This remote "learns" from your other remotes, by far the best way to ensure that the functions do what you want. This thing takes 4 AAA batteries and goes through about 3 sets (12 batteries) in a year.
On the upside, the remote seems to be nearly indestructible: My family has dropped it more times than I can count and my toddler even put it in the toilet! After drying it out and putting in new batteries, my MX-500 came back to life (it even retained the programming!)and it still works like a champ.
On the downside, Universal Remote is very customer-unfriendly. They have decided only to sell to "authorized" home theater companies and the like. If you buy their remotes from anyone not "authorized" you will likely never get one iota of help from them. Avoid any of their remotes that require PC software (the MX-500 DOES NOT need this) and you can program them yourself. If you buy a PC-programmable remote from an un-authorized seller, they WILL NOT send you (or help you with) the required software and you will have a very expensive paper weight.
I've had this for 3 years, maybe more December 8, 2009 R. Drewes I think they are still selling these, so I will right a quick one. I've had this remote for several years and it has worked great with no glitches. It was easy to program, which was done in a few hours. Afterward, my tv, cable box, 3 dvd players and reciever were all programmed working properly. The display is very easy to read and the layout is totally logical. I have dropped it a few times and can tell you it is very well built. The case and buttons are sturdy; no ink has rubbed off and it probably looks pretty close to when I first got it. I got an awesome deal through Amazon. Some places were selling this for double price I found on Amazon.
Although it's working great, I'm thinking of replacing it with either a Harmony or another URC. I want the ability to go from watching cable to dvd with one button touch. Plus the new ones have color screens and rechargeable batteries. I'll still use this one on one of the other tv's.
